Job Description

Under the supervision of the Division Chief and Senior Faculty, the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be responsible for conducting translational cancer health disparities research. The training program in the Division of Cancer Research and CDU/UCLA Cancer Center Partnership will train the postdoctoral fellows in the development and testing of clinically important biomarkers and molecular targets which play a role in the early detection, diagnosis, and/or prognosis from breast, colorectal, prostate, and gynecological cancers to name a few. This opportunity is particularly focused on identifying the role of biomarkers/targets and their role on health disparities in diverse populations. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will receive excellent training in the Division to assure the highest level of scientific rigor and competitiveness for future career development. The Fellow will participate in the cancer health disparities research conducted by the CDU/UCLA Cancer Center Partnership and will contribute to the research by designing and executing experiments using techniques such as: cell culture with ATCC and primary cells lines, in vivo models, ELISA and MTT assays, immunohistochemistry, DNA and RNA extractions, real time PCR, western blots, and other biochemical determinations. They will also participate in the ongoing studies, lab activities, and cancer tissue biorepository activities in the Division. This opportunity particularly invites applicants interested in long-term careers in cancer health disparities research focused on underrepresented or underserved communities.

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:
• Regionally accredited doctoral degree (Ph.D., MD.) required in biomedical science related area.

EXPERIENCE:
• Three years related experience in molecular biology and techniques such as immunohistochemistry, DNA/RNA extractions, real time PCR, western blots, biochemical determinations, plasmid preparation and analysis, cell transfections; anesthesia, injections, aseptic work, animal handling, and tissue excision.
• Prior statistical experience with quantitative data analysis and proficiency with commonly used statistical/numerical analysis.
• Animal self-administration experience is a plus.

• Laboratory skills needed including ability to perform biochemical assays and molecular biology techniques.
• Computer skills.
• Written and oral communication skills.
• Able to troubleshoot, and resolve technical difficulties.
• Committed in career in biomedical science focused in cancer health disparities.

Essential Duties

• Designs and executes experimental procedures.
• Participates in conducting research studies – including performing laboratory assays such as immunohistochemistry, MTT assay, RNA extractions, real time PCR, western blots, biochemical determinations, plasmid preparation and analysis, and cell transfections.
• Participates in the development and analysis of in vivo experiments involving mice including anesthesia, injections, aseptic work, animal handling, and tissue excision.
• Responsible for generating, analyzing, conducting statistical analyses, and presenting scientific data in progress reports, presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications as well as at local/national conferences.
• Assists in maintaining inventory, supplies needed for the research, and coordination of samples/activities from various collaborating departments at CDU, UCLA and others.
• Assists in student training, as well as training new staff and collaborators in research techniques and activities.
• Maintains related correspondence and regulatory paper work.
