Job Description

Under supervision of the director of Drug Abuse Research Program, the Post Doctoral Fellow will perform a broad range of routine to moderately complex research duties, including working with mice, perform techniques such as immunohistochemistry, RNA extractions, real time PCR, western blots and biochemical determinations. Statistical analyses of data and writing up results will also be expected. Working with and training student interns will also be required. The research project will involve nicotine effects on weight, food intake, body composition, deposition of ectopic fat in muscle and liver and food intake genes. Candidates must be eligible for a NIH diversity supplement. Depending on performance and experience, Post Doctoral Fellows may be eligible for a faculty appointment at the conclusion of their fellowship.

Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:
• Graduate degree (PhD) in a biomedical science related area.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Requirements:

Candidate will be funded by a National Institute of Health Diversity supplement requiring applicants to be either 1) ethnic or racial groups determined by NIDA and the NIH to be underrepresented nationally in biomedical or behavioral research. Specifically these groups are African American, Hispanic American, Native American and Alaskan Natives, and Pacific Islanders. 2) persons with disabilities (physical or mental impairments that substantially limit one or more major life activities). Candidates for diversity supplements must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., and must not be recipients of any type of Public Health Service (PHS) funding support at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:
• Three years related experience in molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, RNA extractions, real time PCR, western blots, biochemical determinations, plasmid preparation and analysis, cell transfections; anesthesia, injections, aseptic work, animal handling, and tissue excision.
• Animal self-administration experience is a plus.
• Prior statistical experience.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:
• Laboratory skills needed including ability to perform biochemical assays and molecular biology techniques.
• Computer skills
• Written and oral communication skills
