Job Description

The tutor is responsible for enhancing student academic success at the College of Science and Health (COSH). The tutor’s role is essential in the College’s student retention efforts. The tutor works with the faculty members, retention coordinator, and the Associate Dean in COSH.

Required Qualifications

• Meet with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to give learning assistance.
• Maintain a weekly schedule of available hours in the Student Education and Services Center for student appointments for content course and/or learning strategies.
• Keep regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions utilizing the appropriate forms or software.
• Visit class(es) to make contact with the faculty members at least once to obtain any necessary course syllabi or materials.
• Attend tutor-training sessions as required by the Campus Coordinator.
• Attend workshops in order to obtain necessary certification.
• Assist with additional duties as needed, for example, organizing materials, performing student data collection and data reporting, and other duties.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• A student in good academic standing at a regionally accredited university who has completed at least 12-18 units in the assigned content area (s).
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent of combined education is preferred from a regionally accredited university. Master’s degree preferred.

• Completion of a particular course tutoring with earning at least a “B”
• Recommendation from a faculty member of each course to tutor.
• Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
• A commitment to reliability, and punctuality.
• Demonstrates and maintains an appropriate and professional behavior at all times.
• Demonstrated database management skills.
• Ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines and attain growth-oriented goals.
• Must possess excellent computer skills and be proficient in MS Windows, Word, Excel, etc.

• Prior tutoring experience is preferred but not required.
